At your own arrangement, you can begin your journey with a scenic ride aboard the Limited Express train from Sapporo Station to JR Asahikawa Station, a comfortable 1 hour and 25 minutes that offers a glimpse of Hokkaido's sweeping landscapes along the way (Train tickets are not included and we can arrange at an additional cost). Alternatively, if you are flying into Asahikawa Airport (AKJ), a private airport transfer to your city hotel can be arranged at an additional cost. Upon arrival, make own way to the hotel for check-in and take the rest of the day to settle in and explore Asahikawa at your own pace. Take the opportunity to begin acquainting yourself with Asahikawa — Hokkaido's second-largest city, nestled at the confluence of several rivers and serving as the gateway to the breathtaking Daisetsuzan National Park. Stroll along Heiwa-dori Shopping Street, breathe in the crisp northern air, and let the charm of this vibrant city set the tone for the days ahead. Nestled in the heart of Asahikawa, OMO7 Asahikawa by Hoshino Resorts is a vibrant urban retreat that seamlessly blends comfort and local culture, offering beautifully appointed rooms with stunning city views. Immerse yourself in the hotel's dynamic atmosphere, where curated local experiences, a rooftop terrace, and a lively communal space invite you to discover the very best of Asahikawa's celebrated food scene, craft beer culture, and rich Hokkaido heritage. |

Approx. 3.3km (2.1 miles), 3–4 hours hiking, Elevation gain: 446m (1,463 ft) We gather at Asahikawa Station at 9:30 am before making our way to Mt. Kurodake — one of the most rewarding peaks in all of Hokkaido. Riding the ropeway and chairlift, we ascend to the 7th Station at 1,520m, where our hike begins in earnest. The trail winds through a striking landscape of delicate alpine wildflowers and ancient volcanic rock formations, each step offering a deeper glimpse into the raw, untouched nature of Daisetsuzan National Park. At the summit (1,984m), panoramic views stretch across the park's vast volcanic plateau — a sweeping wilderness of jagged peaks, deep gorges, and untamed wilderness that few places on earth can rival. After descending, we visit the Sounkyo Visitor Centre, where informative exhibits shed light on the remarkable ecology and geology of the region. |

As the day draws to a close, we settle into the charming hot spring village of Sounkyo Onsen, dramatically nestled within the walls of Sounkyo Gorge. Approx. 6.5km (4 miles), 3–4 hours hiking, Elevation gain: 276m (905 ft) After breakfast, we make our way to Kogen Onsen, the gateway to the enchanting Kogen Numa trail. This remote wilderness is one of Hokkaido's most remarkable natural sanctuaries — and home to the magnificent Hokkaido Brown Bear, known locally as higuma. Before setting out, we receive a thorough briefing on recent bear activity at the information centre, ensuring we explore this wild landscape with confidence and care. The trail climbs steadily through native forest, eventually opening onto a breathtaking plateau dotted with more than a dozen shimmering alpine ponds, nestled between 1,230m and 1,460m. In early summer, vivid alpine wildflowers burst into colour against a backdrop of lush greens, while autumn transforms the entire landscape into a rich tapestry of red and gold. Should bear activity temporarily close the Kogen Numa trail, we venture instead to Ginsendai — a striking trailhead that marks the beginning of the Mt. Akadake route. This 4.8km hike climbs 400m through some of Eastern Daisetsuzan's most pristine and untouched forests, rewarding those who make the ascent with sweeping panoramic views. Lingering summer snowbanks create a cool, dramatic contrast to the wildflowers that bloom vibrantly in the wake of the snowmelt. As the day draws to a close, we arrive at Nukabira Onsen, a tranquil and welcoming hot spring village set against a serene natural backdrop. For the evening, we settle into a beautifully renovated historical inn, where we soak in the restorative thermal waters before sitting down to a dinner showcasing unique local ingredients — some foraged directly from the ancient forest that lies just beyond the hotel's door. |

Approx. 4.6km (2.9 miles), 5 hours hiking, Elevation gain: 418m (1370 ft) Our day begins with a scenic drive along the shores of Lake Shikaribetsu, along a road that only reveals itself to travellers during the snowless months of April to October — a fleeting privilege that makes the journey all the more special. After approximately 30 minutes, we arrive at the trailhead on the lake's tranquil shore, where the loop hike up Mt. Hakuunzan awaits. The trail unfolds over roughly five hours, beginning with a peaceful walk along the lakeshore before ascending steeply to the summit of Mt. Hakuunzan, which stands at 1,186 m (3,980 ft). On a clear day, the summit rewards with sweeping views over the glittering expanse of Lake Shikaribetsu — the perfect setting to pause and enjoy a lunch of homemade onigiri rice balls. Keep your eyes and ears open for the Northern Pika, a small and endearing creature that makes its home among the rocky outcrops of the peak. From the summit, the trail descends through a canopy of trees onto a broad ridgeline, before a final steep descent returns us to the car park, covering a total of 4.6 km (2.9 mi). |

This evening, we'll explore the town's local dining scene with dinner in downtown Furano. |

Approx. 6.7km (4.2 miles), 4–5 hours hiking, Elevation gain: 419m (1,376 ft) After breakfast, we check out of our hotel and make our way north to the town of Kamifurano. With lunch provisions in hand, we set off towards Ansei Crater — a striking landscape of jagged rock and sulphurous vents nestled among volcanic peaks. The otherworldly terrain is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere in Japan, and a moment spent here is a moment truly unlike any other. From the crater, we ascend the ridge of Mt. Kamifurano — a steady, rewarding climb that unfolds along the dramatic ridgeline of the Tokachi Volcanic Group. On a clear day, the views stretch across Daisetsuzan National Park, with the smoking summit of Mt. Tokachi commanding the horizon. We descend the way we came before heading to the charming town of Biei for a leisurely afternoon. |

A proud member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Japan, Biei is celebrated for its sweeping, sculpted hillsides — shaped over millennia by rivers carving through ancient volcanic deposits. After exploring the town, we wind through the forests on Biei's outskirts and make our way to Asahidake Onsen, perched at 1,100 m (3,600 ft) on the slopes of Mt. Asahidake. Here, we settle in for the night, breathing in the crisp mountain air and soaking in the restorative natural hot springs fed by the mountain itself. |

Approx. 5.8km (3.6 miles), 4-5 hours hiking, Elevation gain: 699m (2,294 ft) We begin with breakfast at our accommodation before making our way to the Asahidake Ropeway — our gateway to the final summit of the journey. The ropeway carries us up to Sugatami Station, perched at 1,600 m (5,249 ft) on the slopes of Mt. Asahidake, the highest peak in all of Hokkaido. We start with a leisurely loop around Sugatami Pond, a hauntingly beautiful volcanic crater lake, before setting our sights on the summit trail. Make no mistake — this ascent is steep and relentless, earning its place as the most demanding climb of the tour. But the reward is extraordinary. As we reach the summit at 2,291 m (7,516 ft), the entirety of Daisetsuzan National Park and the sweeping landscapes of Hokkaido unfold before us. We pause here to savour a well-earned lunch, taking in the magnitude of what we've accomplished. After descending the ropeway, we board our van for the journey to Asahikawa city — the tour coming full circle. This evening, we gather together one final time to celebrate over a delicious local meal, a fitting close to an unforgettable adventure. |

Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, has a cooler climate than the rest of the country because of its higher latitude. Winters are long and cold, with inland temperatures frequently falling to -10°C or below, while coastal areas remain milder. Summers are pleasant and mild, averaging between 17°C and 22°C, which makes the season comfortable for outdoor pursuits without the humidity found further south. Spring, from April to June, brings a gradual warming as temperatures climb from single digits into the mid-teens, while autumn, from September to November, sees a steady cooling from the low twenties back towards freezing by late November. These distinct seasonal shifts, combined with consistently lower temperatures than Honshu and the southern islands, give Hokkaido a temperate character that appeals to travellers seeking crisp, refreshing conditions throughout much of the year.
While we try to organise everything, mother nature is out of our control. If the weather is too bad to safely hike, such as a typhoon or sudden storm, we will travel to the next inn in our support vehicle. Along the way we will still stop at local restaurants and visit indoor facilities, so you can still experience the charm of the area while travelling safely and comfortably.
Hiking Level & Terrain: While the distances covered on our hikes are short - 5.6 km / 3.5 mi on average - the trails pack a punch, going up and down 460 m / 1 ,500 ft over that distance. The trails in the Daisetsuzan are “rugged” to put it mildly. Expect to make knee-straining steps on large rocks, clamber over exposed roots and slip and slide on loose gravel or mud. Our hikes take us above the tree line, where we are exposed to the full brunt of Hokkaido’s mountain weather - which is an experience in its own right. This tour is perfect for strong walkers looking to step up to a mountainous challenge. It is also well suited for hikers with experience in the mountains who don’t measure a day’s success by the distance covered.
Travel Style: This hiking tour is a series of day hikes; either return or loop routes. We always come back to our van at the end of the day and transfer to our accommodation. This means your overnight luggage can stay in the van and you can experience the best of the Daisetsuzan’s hiking with just a light day pack! Your guides are with the group throughout. Having a guide lead the way means you can relax and take in the scenery. They are also there to provide context on the local landscape and help navigate the dishes served in the evenings.
Tour Departures: We run this tour from June to September and anytime during these months is the perfect time to go! Expect some snow on the trails in the spring season in late June. Spring is also the prime time to see alpine flowers in full bloom, the meadows coming alive with carpets of colour. Summer arrives in Daisetsuzan in August, when most of the snow has melted away. During September, the mountain sees a change in colour with the leaves ablaze with yellows, oranges and reds. The first snowfall usually occurs just before October on Mt. Asahidake which marks the coming end of the autumn hiking season.
Single Supplement: Our tours are priced on a twin share basis. Those travelling by themselves will need to pay an additional supplement for use of a single room. If you are happy to share a room with another guest - of the same gender - then let us know at the time of booking. If we match you with another solo traveller then we can discount the single supplement for both of you.
We like to encourage travellers to visit traditional Japanese 'onsens' while in the country as it is a quintessential local experience. In public onsens this means bathing naked with others of the same gender. While the experience can feel strange at first for some, most of our groups end up enjoying this activity. There is very specific etiquette for visiting onsens - your leader can give you some tips and instructions. Please be aware that travellers with tattoos may not be permitted to enter public onsens. Private onsens may also be available. Talk to your leader for more information.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits
You need to advise Onlyluxe travel and the tour operator on any pre-existing medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of your requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. Onlyluxe Travel and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. If you fail to adequately notify the tour operator of any pre-existing medical conditions and/or disability, the tour operator reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.
Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a tour with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the tour has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any tour up to 60 days prior to departure if the minimum number requirement is unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the tour or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
