Itinerary
Cycling Distance: Approx. 15 km (9 miles), 1-2 hours biking You’ll be picked up from Christchurch or Queenstown for your transfer to Twizel, where your trip coordinators will be waiting at our depot. At 2pm, you’ll have a bike and trail briefing with any final adjustments made for a perfect ride. Once the bikes are loaded, we’ll drive to the Tekapo B Power Station on the shores of Lake Pukaki. From there, the adventure begins with a scenic 4 km (2 miles) ride along a sealed road to the lakeside track. Then a ride along the trail’s edge follows, leading us to the elegant Lakestone Lodge, where your hosts, Anna and Mike, will be waiting. |
||
You’ll stay at the elegant Lakestone Lodge, an exquisite sanctuary lying at the southern end of the beautiful turquoise waters of Lake Pūkaki. With private courtyards and a bath with a view, soak and unwind the surrounding breathtaking scenery of the lake and the majestic Aoraki/Mount Cook. Tonight’s dinner is a tantalising preview of the epic week ahead. As the evening deepens, the Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve puts on a natural celestial show. Just a short 10-minute stroll from the lodge, lose yourself in a stargazing extravaganza under one of the world’s clearest night skies. |
Begin your day in the exquisite dining room, where breakfast is paired with the arousing views that sweep up the tranquil valley. Our shuttle then arrives, and we embark on an exciting 58 km (36 miles) drive along the pristine western edge of Lake Pukaki. En route, marvel at the crystal-clear waters of the lake reflecting the sky in a dazzling display. This scenic journey leads us to the charming Aoraki/Mt Cook Alpine Village, gateway to gorgeous alpine scenery and outdoor adventures. Our destination in this quaint village is the prestigious Hermitage Hotel, home to the renowned Sir Edmund Hillary Museum. This museum vividly chronicles Hillary's global expeditions and daring adventures in Antarctica, offering more than just artefacts. From the Hermitage Hotel, venture on a Glacier Explorers Boat Cruise for an exhilarating encounter with the ancient Tasman Glacier, a monumental frozen river that has endured for over a thousand years. Experience the enormity of NZ's largest glacier as you weave in and out of floating icebergs. |
||
After this inspiring tour, the remainder of the day is yours to explore. Take a tranquil walk through the scenic Hooker Valley, where towering peaks and vibrant wildflowers create an unreal panorama. As the sun sets, our shuttle will return you to the lodge. Relax and unwind with a refreshing drink, reflecting on the day's adventures before enjoying a delightful evening meal. |
Cycling Distance: Approx 45 km (28 miles), 2-3 hours biking Sit for a delectable morning meal before packing your bags in readiness for today’s expedition. Our journey continues around the lakefront, traversing the expansive Twizel plains. On course, we’ll pass by Pukaki Airport, soaking in the scenery as we make our way toward Twizel township. Once we’re done touring the town, we’ll savour an early lunch in preparation for the next leg of the adventure to Lake Ohau, just 35 km (22 miles) away. |
||
The first stretch covers 20 km (12 miles) of smooth, paved roads alongside serene canals that lead to the southern tip of Lake Ohau. From there, an off-road trail hugs the lake's edge for either 3 km (2 miles) or 8 km (5 miles), offering stunning views before rejoining a scenic road that winds past the tranquil lake towards your accommodation for the night at The Barn at Killin B&B. Nestled on 25 acres, with private access to Lake Middleton, unwind in your private ensuite or the sun terrace with stunning mountain and lake views. Come evening, dinner will be served against a backdrop of awe-striking views, the perfect conclusion to your day of exploration. |
Cycling Distance: Approx 50 km (31 miles), 3-4 hours biking Ease into your morning with a leisurely breakfast, gearing up for the Tarnbrae trail adventure. This winding path meanders through foothills, crossing a picturesque stream hugged by lush bushes. As you ascend to the trail's pinnacle, the Mackenzie Basin unfolds before you—a sweeping vista that crowns your climb with awe. Navigate the zig-zag descent with care, swiftly descending to tranquil grassy flats below. Follow rugged four-wheel-drive tracks to a rural road and the storied woolshed, a relic echoing tales of yesteryears. After a delightful picnic, trace the gravel road until it transforms into a smooth seal, leading you into Ōmarama. Known for its world-renowned gliding sites, it's an ideal base to soar or, for a detour, explore the famed clay cliffs nearby—a geological wonder etched in time. |
||
As the day gently ebbs, we’ll make our way to Merino Lodge, our accommodation for the night and one of the finest places to stay in New Zealand. Located in the heart of the high country, among the Southern Alps, this cosy retreat blends luxury and nature seamlessly, with natural stone walls and woollen decor greeting you upon arrival. Once you’re settled in, unwind at the nearby Hot Tubs Ōmarama. Here, amidst the panoramic views, soak in the private, wood-fired hot tub filled with pure mountain water to soothe your weary muscles before returning to the lodge to draw the curtain for the day. |
Cycling Distance: Approx 68 km (42 miles), 4-6 hours cycling Wake up to breakfast before we hit the trails on two wheels. We’ll start by heading east of the Alps2Ocean trail towards the coast, diving into the region famous for its spectacular hydro lakes. The trail then takes us around a lake created by Benmore Dam, which also happens to be the biggest earth dam in New Zealand. After about 12 km (7 miles), we'll hit Sailors Cutting, home to a classic Kiwi caravan park. This place is buzzing in summer with caravans parked from day one, providing the perfect spot for boaters and water skiers. This is the newest stretch of the A2O, and we think it’s one of the trail’s most jaw-dropping sections. Pedal along the shores of Lake Benmore and immerse yourself in the epic views of the Waitaki Valley from atop the Benmore Dam. Along the way, we’ll stop for a picnic lunch before continuing along Lake Aviemore and passing by the historic Waitaki Dam and Village. |
||
Our accommodation for today is the Waitaki Braids Lodge, a charming and comfortable respite located in Kurow, in the thrilling Waitaki Valley. On arrival, there’s plenty of time to go about the day. Enjoy a visit to the nearby boutique River-T Winery and tantalise your tastebuds with some of the finest wines in Waitaki Valley. |
Cycling Distance: Approx 69 km (43 miles), 4-6 hours cycling After a hearty breakfast at the Lodge, we’ll start with a scenic ride down the valley, following the tranquil path alongside the Waitaki River. After approximately 29 km (18 miles), we’ll arrive in Duntroon, where a cosy café awaits, perfect for a coffee break. Refreshed, we’ll continue through dramatic landscapes adorned with limestone outcrops and boulders. Be sure to explore the awe-inspiring Elephant Rocks nearby before the trail winds through enrapturing valleys and charming small towns. A steady climb rewards you with an astonishing rural viewpoint, followed by an exhilarating descent into the Rakis Tunnel. |
||

New Zealand’s maritime climate makes November to April the most ideal months for travelling to the country.
The South Island’s temperature during summer ranges from 1030 ºC, with a pleasant 40 50% humidity. However, the country’s mountainous terrain and position in the path of the ‘Roaring 40s’ means its weather changes frequently, sometimes unexpectedly. Higher altitudes are always considerably cooler, and snowfall is not uncommon, even in summer. Ergo, you should ensure you have a good waterproof jacket and warm clothing.
Onlyluxe Travel acts as travel agency and work with different tour operators.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits
You need to advise Onlyluxe travel and the tour operator on any pre-existing medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of your requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. Onlyluxe Travel and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. If you fail to adequately notify the tour operator of any pre-existing medical conditions and/or disability, the tour operator reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.
Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The walks take place in very special wilderness settings. The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
