Itinerary
Driving information: 400km/249mi | 5hrs Ease into your adventure as you travel east towards Fitzroy Crossing. A true outback town, Fitzroy Crossing came into existence for the simple reason that it was a suitable place to cross the mighty Fitzroy River, which, during the Wet Season, was capable of stranding travellers for weeks. Visit the site of the original crossing, located a short distance out of town, as well as the colourful Mangkaja Arts, which represents Aboriginal artists across the 4 language groups within the Fitzroy Valley region. |
||
Next, join a local national park ranger on a guided cruise through majestic through Danggu Geikie Gorge. This mysterious gorge was formed by the Fitzroy River carving through an ancient fossil reef that existed over 350 million years ago. As you cruise between spectacular multi-coloured 30 metre (98 feet) cliffs, keep an eye out for birds, fruit bats and freshwater crocodiles. Tonight, you will settle into the Safari Cabins at the Fitzroy River Lodge. Similar to a regular motel room, this traditional Kimberley-style accommodation features beds with pillows and linen, fans, power and private ensuite. Relax on the porch and enjoy the ambience before joining the group for an old-fashioned Aussie BBQ. |
Driving information: 400km/249mi | 6hrs Visit the historic town of Halls Creek, the site of the first payable gold find in Western Australia in 1885. Once a booming township full of keen miners hoping to make it big, Halls Creek is now a ghost town with numerous old buildings to explore. While in the area, pay a visit to the remarkable China Wall, a natural vein of sub-vertical quartz rising up to 6-metres (20ft) above the ground. This striking formation transects the country in both directions, spearing high out of the ground and disappearing back down into the earth again. In the late afternoon, arrive at Purnululu National Park, home of the splendid Bungle Bungles. Rising 300 metres (984 feet) above grassy plains, these orange and black sandstone domes are one of the world’s most fascinating geological landmarks. For the next 2 nights, rest and relax in your eco-safari tent, which boasts views of the Bungles Massif from your door. The camp features modern facilities, a covered dining deck with panoramic views and an open fire around which you can relax beneath a sparkling Kimberley night sky. |
Distance travelled: 60km/37mi | 2hrs Spend a full day exploring the wonders of the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park. Although the area was known to Indigenous people for centuries, it was only “discovered” by the rest of the world in the early 1980s. In the morning, set out to traverse Echidna Chasm (2km/1.25mi), one of the highlights of the park. Lined with Livistona palms, the gorge is a spectacularly long, narrow chasm, with striking colour variations that change depending on the angle of the sun. The amazing conglomerate boulders along the path provide a clue to the sedimentary origin of the Bungle Bungles. Next, venture to Cathedral Gorge to explore an astonishing natural amphitheatre of red rock. The 2-3km (1.25-1.9mi) Top Trail features unusual beehive striped formations and deep gorges, making it one of Western Australia’s most fascinating geological landmarks. Be sure to try out your singing voice – the acoustics are amazing! In the afternoon, put the park into perspective with an optional scenic helicopter flight over the Bungle Bungles (approx. $450AUD per person, own expense). From above, these curious striped domes look like gigantic ant hills popping out of the earth. |
Distance travelled: 400km/249mi | 6hrs Bid farewell to Purnululu and travel to the ancient realm of Mimbi Caves, one of Western Australia’s largest cave systems. With a local Gooniyandi guide, delve deep into the caves and listen in to ancient Dreaming stories about the caves and their importance to the Traditional Owners. The spectacular and delicate limestone formations, brilliantly vivid colours and icy cold, crystal clear freshwater pools are all that remain of the Devonian Great Barrier Reef that was formed over 350 million years ago. These remains are incredibly well-preserved and attract geologists from all over the world. After enjoying fresh damper and billy tea with the Caves’ Traditional Owners, continue on your way and come full circle back to Fitzroy River Lodge, where you will stay the night. |
Distance travelled: 400km/249mi | 6hrs Following another night by the Fitzroy River, enter into Bunuba Country to see more of Western Australia’s incredible caves. With a local Bunuba guide, delve deep into Tunnel Creek, a 750-metre cave system in which you will find hidden recesses, stalactites and stalagmites, and a large variety of wildlife. As you explore, your guide will enthral you with the legend of Jandamarra, an Aboriginal freedom fighter who used the tunnels as a hideout in the late 1800s. |
||
reshen up with a swim in an idyllic waterhole before traveling to Windjana Gorge (Bandilhgan), a delightful outback oasis. Beneath gorge walls riding 90-metres (295ft), enjoy a picnic lunch and search for freshwater crocodiles, local birdlife and Indigenous bush tucker such as native fig. The iconic Gibb River Road then leads you from the picturesque Napier Ranges to the infamous Derby ‘Boab Prison Tree’. Known as Kunumudj, this remarkable tree has a circumference of over 14-metres (46ft) and is believed to be 1,500 years old. The tree is said to have been used as a prison, or as a holding area for Aboriginal prisoners being transported long distances to the goal at Derby. Arrive back in Broome in the evening to commence your onward journey. |

Onlyluxe Travel and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The walks take place in very special wilderness settings. The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
