Setting Off: The Old City of Salzburg
The route officially commences at Mozartplatz, located right in the centre of Salzburg's Old City. Leaving the birthplace of Mozart, the path quickly aligns with the River Salzach. This initial stretch allows you to establish a comfortable pedalling rhythm on well-maintained paths while leaving the urban architecture behind. The transition from the grand baroque buildings of the city to the lush, green surroundings of the Austrian countryside happens seamlessly.

Major Highlights Along the Salzach River
The Celtic City of Hallein: Your first major waypoint is Hallein, an ancient town deeply rooted in Celtic history and the historic salt trade. The town centre features well-preserved architecture and narrow streets, providing an excellent opportunity for a brief rest and a coffee before continuing your southward journey.
Golling Waterfall and Bluntautal Valley: Further along the path, the route presents opportunities to experience the region's prominent natural water features. The Golling Waterfall drops impressively through the surrounding alpine forest, offering a refreshing microclimate on warmer riding days. Just nearby is the Bluntautal Valley, a protected nature area known for its deep green, crystal-clear lakes mirroring the surrounding mountain peaks.
The Impressive Salzachöfen Gorge: As the path continues, you will encounter a short but noticeable climb that leads you past the Salzachöfen. Here, the River Salzach slices dramatically through the solid rock of the Tennengebirge massif. The gorge is a testament to the sheer power of the water, creating a narrow, imposing canyon that stands out as one of the most striking geological features of the entire stage.

Reaching Bischofshofen marks the successful completion of your first 53 kilometres on the Alpe Adria Cycle Path. The town provides ample amenities, comfortable accommodation, and excellent local dining options to help you recover and prepare for the next leg of your journey into the Gastein Valley.
