Major Highlights Along the Route
The disused Pontebbana railway line is the star of this stage. You will pedal through dozens of illuminated tunnels and cross spectacular iron bridges and stone viaducts that span deep gorges and valleys, offering breathtaking views that were once reserved for train passengers.
The Town of Pontebba: The first significant town you will reach is Pontebba, which historically marked the border between the Republic of Venice and the Austrian Empire. It serves as a natural halfway point for a coffee break. Just beyond the town, the cycle path crosses the Fella river over an impressive iron bridge, a key photo opportunity.
The Station of Chiusaforte: A highlight for many cyclists is the old railway station at Chiusaforte, which has been converted into a small museum and rest stop. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the railway line you are riding on. This is an excellent spot to refill water bottles and appreciate the remarkable engineering of the path.
The Ciclostazione at Resiutta: Further south, you will find a "ciclostazione" (bike station) in Resiutta, a popular stop offering refreshments and bike services. The village is also famous for its local specialty, grilled chicken, providing a perfect excuse for a longer lunch break before tackling the final stretch.
The Town of Moggio Udinese: As you continue your descent, the valley begins to widen, and the air feels warmer. You will pass Moggio Udinese, a town dominated by a historic abbey perched on a hill. The landscape transitions from rugged alpine scenery to the gentler, rolling hills characteristic of the Friuli region.

Arriving in Venzone
The final part of the ride takes you along the banks of the Fella river before it merges with the Tagliamento. Your destination, Venzone, comes into view, distinguished by its magnificent, perfectly restored medieval walls. Declared a national monument, Venzone was almost entirely destroyed by an earthquake in 1976 and has been meticulously rebuilt, stone by stone, to its former glory. Arriving in this living museum marks the successful completion of a 60-kilometre journey from the high Alps. The town offers charming accommodations and delightful local cuisine, making it an ideal place to recover. Take the time to explore Venzone’s historic centre, walk along its formidable walls, and prepare for the next leg of your journey towards the Adriatic coast.
