Itinerary
Upon arrival at St. John’s, the iconic and lively capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, you will be greeted by the staff who will provide you with your cabin tags. Fill in your name and ship cabin number carefully, so your luggage can be delivered to the vessel. Depart St. John’s port on Ocean Endeavour, and as you sail through the famed Narrows, keep an eye out for its postcard-perfect attractions, including Signal Hill, the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, The Rooms (the city’s cultural centre), and the stunning community of the Battery, formerly known as the Crow’s Nest Cove. The breathtaking panorama is irresistible to shutterbugs. Ensure not to be too engrossed in the stunning views as the voyage takes you to the wild North Atlantic. There, you are sure to be astounded by the massive icebergs and beautiful wildlife such as whales, and seabirds. |
Expect a friendly welcome typical of Newfoundland as we arrive on the northeast coast. Be mesmerized by this part of Newfoundland characterised by several breathtaking bays, scenic islands and headlands, and charming villages that decorate its rocky shores. Explore the area and immortalise the unique charm of the classic island communities and picturesque coastlines by capturing them. Later, we will find a harbour in one of the picturesque villages dotting its rocky isles and inlets. Learn the culture of the region and their way of life from the friendly locals. |
After a delicious breakfast aboard, we begin the day by traversing the renovated Viking habitation at L'Anse aux Meadows, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the only established Norse settlement in North America. Discover archeological antiquities, including bronze, iron, and stone items found here in 1960 and dating back to approximately 1000 CE. Interestingly, the location was initially established by a close reading of the Viking sagas. Explore the exceptional interpretation centre and get a feel of what life was like in the Viking habitation. You encounter staff in period costumes that reenact what life was like for the pioneering Norsemen, renovated Norse-style sod buildings, and Viking ruins. It is impossible not to be immersed in Norse history, so it is a must-see for visitors to Newfoundland and Labrador! |
Today, we stop at the World Heritage site of Red Bay Basque Whaling Station in Labrador. Take a gander at the archeological site which rests on the shore of the Strait of Belle isle, where the Basque whalers created North America’s first export industry. They operated out of the harbour in the 1500s. The spectacular interpretation centre has tools, personal items, and navigational instruments recovered from the wreck of the whaling ship San Juan. The ship was lost in a storm in 1565 and found centuries later plunged into the harbour. Your adventure continues as we visit the nearby Saddle Island, a tiny island with picturesque beach and a famous 500 m reef. Here, we learn about the rich history of the world's most complete example of early industrial-scale whaling. |
Today, we visit the Gros Morne National Park, a World Heritage site and Newfoundland's most dramatic landscape. This park, with its inexhaustible allure, extends to cover 1,805 square kilometres. There are walking and hiking options available; you could hike along the Trout River or go for a short on the Tablelands. This experience will have you encounter awe-inspiring landscapes and soak in charming views of the scenic Bonne Bay. The Tablelands are a 600-metre plateau, an excellent example of an exposed mantle. The mineral-rich rocks support very little life and are typically found below the Earth's crust, which gives it an eerie aura. Hiking the Tablelands will make for an unforgettable experience. Take your time to explore the Park's insightful Discovery Centre and understand the geological significance of the area. Following that, visit the delightful town of Woody Point for luscious cappuccino and souvenirs. |
Traverse the scenic and windswept coast of southern Newfoundland, characterised by fjords, coves, a few outport communities, and a sparse population. The shallow waters along the coast are among the world’s richest fishing grounds for humans and animals. So, while at sea, keep an eye out for humpbacks, minkes, white-sided dolphins and much other marine life. Visit the remote outport of Francois pronounced “Fransway ''. It is the best place to escape reality as it is sparsely populated and has no road out, meaning there are zero cars. What you’ll find is a rugged amphitheatre and a waterfall cascading beautifully into town. If you are feeling energetic, you could hike the Friar, a 3.2 km loop trail rewarding you with unbelievable views at every turn. But if you aren’t up for that, you could tread the boardwalks instead. Whether by the Zodiac or land excursions, there are several peculiar bays and coves to explore, where you’ll encounter exceptional geology and precious botanical life. In all of this, remember to also be on the lookout for wildlife and always have your camera ready. This visit is usually the trip’s highlight. Make sure to have the best time exploring this stunning remote coast. |
A long Zodiac ride up the Conne River takes you to the First Nations community of Miawpukek, the name meaning “middle river”. Receive a warm welcome from the local leaders before you are plunged into its history spending time to explore this special community. The First Nation community of Miapukek became a permanent settlement sometime in the year 1822. Before that, it was one of several semi-permanent camping sites used by Mi'kmaq people, who traditionally travelled nomadically throughout the east coast of Canada. This historic community was established as a reserve in 1987 and, since then, has successfully morphed traditional knowledge and contemporary practice. There are several activities available to you in the lively hotspot of Miawpukek, including a visit to the powwow grounds or enjoying a cultural presentation. |
A few kilometres offshore of Newfoundland is Saint-Pierre. Explore the charming town of Saint-Pierre, the last bastion of France’s colonial territories in North America. Immerse in its picturesque and brilliantly coloured shops and houses reflecting Saint-Pierre's unique historical character. Experience the French culture as you savour tasty French cuisine, luscious wine, unique boutique shops, pleasant cafes that line its charming streets. Get to understand why the sweets at the local cafes and bakeries are in high demand. Saint-Pierre also helps you experience European living because the 6,000 locals drive Citroens, smoke Gauloises, and pay in euros. |
Today being the last day of our expedition, we sail back through the scenic Narrows and into St. John’s harbour. The expedition team is on standby to assist with your luggage and transportation as we say our goodbyes. Depart with a new found sense of adventure and continue your journey onwards. Note: This itinerary is provided as an example only – prevailing conditions and local arrangements may cause variation. |

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits
You need to advise Onlyluxe travel and the tour operator on any pre-existing medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of your requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. Onlyluxe Travel and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. If you fail to adequately notify the tour operator of any pre-existing medical conditions and/or disability, the tour operator reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.
Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a tour with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the tour has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any tour up to 60 days prior to departure if the minimum number requirement is unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the tour or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
In the genuine spirit of expedition travel, we encourage exploration and adventure offering flexibility in challenging environments. This itinerary is only a guide and is subject to change due to weather, sea and other conditions beyond our control.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
