Level 3: Savour a delightful breakfast before a guided walk from your hotel to the stunning emerald-green lake, Lago di Braies. The hike is mostly moderate, with a few short climbs along a variety of trails. Journey to the lake following the path taken by the SS hostages, the leaders of 19 nations who were freed after the First World War by Villabassa's residents, we travel through small villages and farmland to explore the idyllic Lago di Braies, which is a protected nature reserve with enchanting sheer rocky cliffs. It's a notable lake among the region's 297 glacier lakes fed by underground springs and alpine streams. Level 5: Begin your hike at the stunning Lake di Braies and climb to Rossalmhütte through quite steep walking paths dotted by impressive landmarks that beckon you to explore. The scenery during the whole walk is simply beautiful, with the opportunity to spot wildlife and learn more about the river ecosystem and Aboriginal history. Unwind back at the hotel before savouring a delectable dinner at the hotel’s charming restaurant showcasing local cuisine. |
TWO HIKING OPTIONS: Level 3: Today, explore the high pastures and ridges along the Austrian border from Kreutzberg Pass to Nemes Alm. At an altitude of 1,636m above sea level lies Kreuzberg Pass, a high mountain pass between the provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno. This pass marks the beginning of your ascent to Knieberg. Then, stroll steadily to take in the beautiful views of the Rotwand and Monte Popera at a distance. Come afternoon, visit Alpe Nemes Hut and be treated for a well-deserved drink and homemade apple strudel. Level 5: Following a different track to Level 3, you’ll aim to summit Knieberg via Kreuzberg Pass where you’ll descend to Alep Nemes hut for a well deserved break. At the hut, enjoy a spectacular view of the Sesto Croda Rossa brought to your doorstep along with delicious cake and fresh milk to savour . |
TWO HIKING OPTIONS: Level 3: Begin at 2000 metres (6, 562ft) altitude walking among beautiful wildflowers and ascend to the summit of Strudlekopf (7,579ft/2,310m). Marvel at a panoramic mountain in Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park in South Tyrol. Top Strudelkopf, there are sensational views of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Cadini di Misurina, the Cristallo Group, and even the Tofane Group to take pleasure in. We stop at the Durrenstein hut in the early afternoon where local Kaiserschmarrn specialty. Level 5: Ascend from Platzwiese, a high alpine plateau in the Valle di Braies to the summit of Durrenstein (9,314ft/2,840m), an impressive summit offering spectacular views up to the Tyrol region of Austria. |
Today, it’s up to you how and where you spend the day. The hotel spa may be an option and the terrace is also welcoming. In the mood to shop or explore, take a self-guided walk around this wonderful area. You can walk through graceful low-lying hills in the mystical city of Bolzano, delight in its narrow streets, and take pleasure in its magnificent architecture. A visit to the historic museum built in honour of Ötzi, the 5,000-year-old 'iceman' whose remarkably well-preserved body was found in 1991 high on a glacier on the Austro-Italian frontier will be the highlight of your stroll in the city. You can also take some time to explore the mediaeval corners of Brucino. You are sure to find many surprises among its shops and outdoor cafés. Or you can continue to the bustling provincial capital of Lienz in Austria. Lunch and dinner are up to you today so make your choice among the local restaurants in the area and enjoy great meals to your fill. |
TWO HIKING OPTIONS: Level 3: Conquer the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, majestic chimneys featuring three distinctive battlement-like peaks, in the Sexten Dolomites. These are one of the best-known mountain groups in the area. Circle the three enormous pillars of rock that tower into the sky, a symbol of the Italian Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today’s walk is unquestionably the highlight of the week. Tonight the restaurant will delight your palate with an authentic Tyrolean gourmet dinner. Level 5: Complete a beautiful walk near the spectacular Tre Cime di Lavaredo, following a trail that runs along the north side of Paternkofel to the Comici hut above Fischleintal. It is also the site of an open-air museum dedicated to the first world war, where alpine flowers grow alongside trenches, dugouts, and shell craters. As you descend, take pleasure in the beautiful sight of the magnificent blue gentians, alpine white edelweiss, and bright saffron that make a breathtaking landscape around Lake Misurina. In the Dolomites (as always in the mountains) the weather is very changeable. In summer, expect rain on one day in two, which is likely to come in short but heavy, thundery bursts. In the valleys, daytime temperatures range from 12C to 22C (54F to 72F), although 25C (77F) is not unusual. In the mountains, it will be slightly colder. There are always patches of snow remaining on the higher peaks in late May and early November, and sometimes due to unpredictable winter weather, this can remain for a little longer. There is always the possibility of snowfall at any time of the season, therefore you need to be ready for anything, so pack shorts as well as warmer clothes; full waterproofs and sunscreen.
The walking level on this trip is rated Level 3 Moderate and 5 Challenging.
Level 1 Leisurely: Experience is not necessary; anyone fit and healthy enough to complete a weekend walk will thrive. Walks are often optional. Trails are seldom flat, so expect a reasonable number of ascents and descents. You normally walk for two to five hours per day; daily ascents will likely be around 985ft to 1,640ft (300m to 500m), perhaps with the odd day around 1,970ft (600m).
Level 3 Moderate: Expect easy, medium-length walks or harder, shorter walks. Some experience is useful, but not essential. Good health and reasonable fitness are important. There will be walks at higher altitudes and some longer, harder days. Generally, though, the underfoot conditions will be fair. A walking day is normally five to seven hours; daily ascents will likely be around 1,640ft to 2,625ft (500m to 800m), perhaps with the odd day around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m).
Level 5 Challenging: Fitness is vital with extended walking in mountainous terrain. You might also experience high altitude, challenging climates and remote locations. Trekking experience is desirable, but not vital if you are confident in your physical condition. Walking days are usually between six and eight hours, although they may be longer for passes or peaks. Daily ascents can be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Level 7 Tough: Trekking experience is essential and preferably at altitude. You need complete confidence in your ability to trek for many days over difficult terrain. You may encounter extreme altitude and weather conditions and may need to use ice axes and crampons. Stamina is essential as walking days last six to nine hours (sometimes more on occasions). Daily ascents will likely be around 2,955ft to 3,280ft (900m to 1,000m), perhaps with the odd day around 3,610ft to 3,940ft (1,100m to 1,200m).
Split and optional grades: Where a trip falls between two grades, an intermediate or ‘split’ grade is used. For example, Level 2 (Leisurely/Moderate). Occasionally there are optional ascents available; in this case, the grade will be highlighted.
We enjoy walks in the same areas on each trip, but the length and difficulty vary according to the walking level. Please make sure you choose the week that best suits your ability. Most weeks offer Activity Level 3 (Moderate) walking, where we usually walk between five and seven hours per day. The area we are visiting is criss-crossed by a network of long-established trails and walking paths, most well-maintained and waymarked. Even so, paths are rocky and on occasion exposed. A reasonable level of fitness is required for these weeks. On some weeks, we offer Level 5 (Challenging) walking. On these departures, we usually walk between six and eight hours per day at a steady pace. We use established trails and mountain paths, which are often steep, rocky and more exposed than the Level 3 walks. For these departures, you will need to be surefooted and have a good level of fitness. Some fixed equipment (such as holding onto a steel wire or handrail for security) may be encountered.
The exact itinerary (and therefore the length of each walk) may vary depending on weather conditions or other factors beyond our control. While aiming to always follow the routes described in these trip notes, it will be the leader’s decision to amend the itinerary if and when necessary.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits

Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The walks take place in very special wilderness settings. The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a walk with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the walk has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any walk up to 60 days prior to departure if a minimum of 4 walkers are unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the walk or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
