Itinerary
TWO BIKING OPTIONS: On the first day of the trip, meet your tour leaders at 8:00 a.m. in front of the Starbucks inside the Copenhagen Central Station, located at Banegårdspladsen1 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Please ensure you arrive dressed in your biking clothes and bring your luggage and a daypack containing your rain gear, passport and anything else you may want for the day's ride. (Your luggage will be transported to our first night's accommodation). Velkommen til Danmark! After meeting in Denmark's elegant capital city, we board a shuttle to the island of Fyn (also known as Funen). Your tour leaders fit your bike and enlighten you briefly on biking techniques and safety, and then we set off on the famed castle route around the peninsula of Hindsholm, known to have the lowest rainfall in Denmark. Follow serpentine roads and soak in the gorgeous coast of Fyn. We bike through a terrain of ancient villages, charming market towns and magnificent manors and estates of old Danish aristocracy. Fyn alone has 123 castles! We enjoy lunch in the brilliant Kerteminde, a port town National Geographic called one of Europe's best secret villages. We continue on the castle route and cycle into Odense, one of Denmark's oldest cities and the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. One can imagine the cobblestone streets, colourful row houses and stunning historic architecture entering his stories. Our home for the night is Hotel Odeon, an oasis right in the lively centre of the talented writer's neighbourhood. Get cosy in your room and enjoy our retreat's warm, calm ambience before we reconvene for a welcome reception and a modern Scandinavian dinner. |
TWO BIKING OPTIONS: This morning, we hop on our bikes and set out to explore Odense. A local guide who'll uncover some of the fascinating history of this place will join us on our adventure. We ply the idyllic castle route and pedal through the scenic port of Lundeborg. We stop to visit Broholm Castle, a magnificent 12th-century castle surrounded by lush rolling hills. Take an engrossing odyssey through centuries of Denmark's history, learning about the kings and queens who lived here and the Ulfeldt, Skeel and Sehested family sagas. |
||
We recover our energy with a picnic lunch of local delicacies and then stop for a local wine tasting before cycling into Svendborg, a picturesque town with its unique combination of maritime tradition and old-world feel. Explore the artisan shops and cosy safes before arriving at Stella Maris, an elegant boutique hotel on the lovely Svendborg Sound and our home for the next two nights. Tonight, we enjoy dinner featuring delectable French cuisine at the hotel's restaurant, where we can admire the idyllic views of the sound and watch the passing boats. |
TWO HIKING OPTIONS: Enjoy a hearty breakfast before cycling out of Svendborg and onto the Danish archipelago. Soak in the verdant woodland and wild seaside of Tåsinge island, passing castles and charming rural villages. Visit Troense, a quaint skippers town with half-timbered houses built in the 18th century. Dine like royalty in the orangery of a 13th-century castle and admire the awe-inspiring views of Svendborg Sound and the South Fyn Archipelago. On a clear day, you can see as far as Kiel in Northern Germany. Keep cycling onto breathtaking Langaland Island, where you'll get an idyllic picture of what Denmark used to be like during the time of the nobility. Back at our hotel, indulge in a wild swim in the sea or savour a cocktail on the hotel's scenic deck before venturing into Svendborg for dinner on your own. Your tour leaders are happy to offer restaurant recommendations. |
TWO BIKING OPTIONS: We board a ferry and set out to Ærøskøbing on Ærø Island. The town, featuring cobblestone lanes, half-timbered homes and brightly coloured hollyhocks, looks like something out of a storybook illustration. It's the best-preserved 18th-century town in Denmark, and some sections are more than 750 years old. You'll feel like you're stepping into a time capsule as you tour the ancient streets and artisan shops. Then, pedal down the Danish seaside, passing iconic colourful beach houses, patchwork pastures and stretching farmland. Stop at local farm shops to sample the seasonal harvest. Along the way, we visit the 13th-century church, Bregninge Kirke. We relish a delightful picnic lunch at Søbygaard Manor, the last standing ducal residence. Before leaving the island, check out the Vester Mill, a thatched windmill built in the 1800s. Continue to the lovely portside town of Soby and hop on a ferry to return to Fyn. |
||
We arrive at Falsled Kro, our home for the next two nights. It is a stunning whitewashed, thatched-roofed Relais & Chateaux inn that accentuates the Scandinavian hygge concept with its authentic Danish design, cosy rooms, roaring fires and gorgeous surroundings. Tonight, we convene for an unforgettable dinner featuring sumptuous dishes with bold flavours and modern influences at the hotel's Michelin-recommended restaurant. |
TWO BIKING OPTIONS: Following breakfast this morning, we pick up the Fyn castle route and pedal into the shady Svanninge countryside. Svanninge and Sollerup are the island's largest contiguous forest and natural area. En route, we stop in charming Danish villages with cross-timbered homes and straw roofs. At the foot of the South Funen Alps, cycle past the scenic windmill Trente Molle constructed in 1872 and the idyllic 16th-century Renaissance complex of Sandhot Slot. The estate dates to the 15th century and, despite maintaining its cultural heritage, supports modern farming and agriculture. Drink in the slanting hills, verdant green oak, and beech woods and see why it's called "The Funen Alps." We then arrive at Trabjerg Hill, the third highest point on Funen, and admire the expansive island and sea views. Passing winding hills, lush green meadows and farmland, we return to Falsled Kro. Relish some R&R before we reconvene to raise a toast to our Danish adventure. We then sit for another farm-fresh Nordic dinner at the hotel's restaurant. |
Level 1, Approx 24 km (15 miles), 1-2 hours biking, Elevation gain: 183 m (600 ft) Today's coastal route takes us to the island of Helnæs, where life indeed slows down. It has been inhabited since the Stone Age, 1231—pedal along white sand beaches with sweeping views of the sea. We pass charming thatched-roofed villages, farmland and pastures peppered with windmills and beautiful meadows overflowing with colourful flowers. There's time to freshen up at the hotel and say your goodbyes before we take the shuttle to Copenhagen, where the trip ends. NOTE: This itinerary is provided as an example only – prevailing conditions and local arrangements may cause variation. |

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions and Age Limits
You need to advise Onlyluxe travel and the tour operator on any pre-existing medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability that might reasonably be expected to increase the risk of your requiring medical attention, or that might affect the normal conduct of a trip and the enjoyment of other trip members. Onlyluxe Travel and the tour operator may require an assessment of your medical condition from a qualified medical practitioner. If you fail to adequately notify the tour operator of any pre-existing medical conditions and/or disability, the tour operator reserves the right, at its reasonable discretion, to cancel your participation in a trip at any time, including after the commencement of your trip, with no right of refund if your medical condition, mobility impairment and/or disability could be reasonably expected to affect the normal conduct of the trip and the enjoyment of other trip members.
Cancellation by The Tour Operator
The tour operator is at the mercy of nature in all her beauty and all her fury. The tour operator will under no circumstance knowingly place at risk the health and well-being of our guests and guides. In the case of natural threats, acts of God and the like (e.g. bushfires, impassable snow, etc) the tour operator may need to cancel a tour with very little notice. In some cases, this can occur after the tour has commenced. The tour operator reserves the right to cancel any tour up to 60 days prior to departure if the minimum number requirement is unable to meet for a tour. If the tour operator needs to cancel for any reason, the cost of the tour or any other costs associated with travel to the designated pick up point, overnight accommodation, meals, etc will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore we strongly recommend travel insurance be taken out prior to travel.
Force Majeure
'Force Majeure' means (without restriction) any event which Onlyluxe Travel or its third party providers could not, even with due care, foresee or avoid. Force Majeure covers events such as, but not limited to, adverse weather conditions, fire and all similar events beyond our control. In the case of Force Majeure Onlyluxe Travel will not accept liability, and reserves the right to change and cancel trips.
Evacuations
In rare circumstances, due to injury or unforeseen illness, the tour operator may need to evacuate you from a remote part of the walk. Helicopter evacuations are expensive and in most cases will be at a cost to the customer.
In the genuine spirit of expedition travel, we encourage exploration and adventure offering flexibility in challenging environments. This itinerary is only a guide and is subject to change due to weather, sea and other conditions beyond our control.
For Australian residents, under the Australian Government Medicare Act, it is prohibited for any domestic travel insurance product to provide any financial reimbursement with regard to ambulance or air ambulance services. We therefore strongly advise our customers to take specific ambulance cover through their health insurance provider. Evacuation cost will not be covered by the Onlyluxe Travel and therefore it is also strongly recommended that our customers take out travel insurance to cover (amongst other things) the costs associated with evacuation.
Travel Insurance
In view of the heavy cancellation penalties applied to cancelled reservations in certain circumstances, we strongly recommends suitable travel insurance be purchased at the time the holding deposit is paid. We recommend insurance cover that covers any loss which may be suffered due to cancellation. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance against loss of baggage and medical expenses.
